Kids Company – redesigned and rebuilt
Kid’s Company provides after-school care, early learning, and summer camps in Seattle and King County. When we were approached to help redesign their WordPress website site we first did an assessment to see what they already had.
There had been some interesting structural decisions. It was mostly the kind of changes you see when a site grows over time. Those are usually pretty each to clean up and streamline, but in this case someone had repurposed the built-in blog feature to hold location information for all the programs. Later, when the need to start actually blogging arose, someone had created a new “blog” that lacked some features that both readers and search engines expect to find. There were some other new “content types” for staff, job openings, and camps, as well as the original locations.
Once we got the back end straightened out and streamlined we took the new graphic design and rebuilt 31 new pages, decommissioned another 60+ obsolete or redundant pages, rebuilt the location pages, and added an events calendar.
The cool thing about this project is that even before we’d finished the new version their staff was logging in and making their own changes. Since our unofficial motto is “it’s your website” we couldn’t be happier with the results.
(Frequently asked question: Why don't we always provide links to the websites we build? While the images you see are of the websites as we delivered them, one of our core values as web developers is "it's your website!" We teach our clients to how to update and manage their own websites. That means that over time their sites change to meet their needs, and so we don't feel it's fair to take credit for their contributions.)
